It is possible to embed a visually imperceptible, encrypted patient history in an echocardiographic image. The confidential information is "hidden in plain sight" using a technique called steganography. The advantage of this technique is that it does not attract attention to itself, and does not invite further scrutiny.
This is an original image of aortic dissection.
The second, visually indistinguishable image contains a hidden file
called dissection.html. It was encrypted with the S-Tools program
using the IDEA encryption algorithm with the file name:
"dissection.html" as the pass phrase needed to decrypt the hidden file.
